5.56 resized According to a Government Accountability Office report recently obtained by USA Today, the Pentagon is set to dispose of $1.2 billion worth of ammunition in spite of the fact that an unknown portion of the doomed stockpile is still usable. The February 28 article published in USA Today indicates that Pentagon is unable to discern what portions of the munitions slated for destruction are still viable due to an inability of the Defense Department’s inventory systems to share data effectively, resulting in a failure of one branch of the armed forces to share excess ammowith other branches. In a time when ammunition availability on the civilian market is still spotty, it’s a damn shame to hear about precious rounds going to waste due to bureaucratic inefficiency.
